Liam sprawled on the worn rug, sunlight warming his skin. The afternoon stretched ahead, offering a blank canvas of leisure. A book lay open in his lap, but his gaze drifted towards the overflowing box of family heirlooms. He'd put off this task for weeks, but the thought of digging through old treasures had never felt like a chore.

He pulled out a stack of sepia-toned photographs. They depicted his grandfather, a man of stern reputation, in various poses. He found one, though, that made him pause. His grandfather, young and vibrant, was clowning around on a beach with a woman with wild, windblown hair. The woman wasn't his grandmother. Liam chuckled to himself.
